INSTRUCTIONS FOR PATIENTS UNDER GOING FIXED APPLIANCE

Orthodontic correction is a team work procedure. Unless the orthodontist’s instructions concerning home care are properly followed the treatment becomes more difficult, more time consuming and less rewarding. Hence cooperation on the part of patient and parents are very important. The following guidelines are to be followed guidelines are to be followed by patients who are undergoing fixed appliance therapy.

BRUSHING:

When the orthodontic attachments are in the mouth there are more chances for food stagnation and plaque formation. Hence extra time should be spent for brushing their teeth and maintaining good oral hygiene. Brushing should be gentle so that all the attachments fixed by your orthodontist will not get disturbed. The patients should look into the mirror and use an orthodontic brush to clean their teeth and brushing should be done twice daily. If necessary inter dental brush can be used to clean orthodontic attachments and inaccessible areas. It is ideal to brush after every meal. Patients who do not maintain oral hygiene may develop gum disease and they have to undergo oral prophylaxis/ periodontal treatment.

MOUTH WASHES:

Mouth wash should be used at least twice daily to keep the mouth more hygienic. Periodic oral prophylaxis/ caries check up to be done by your dentist.

FOOD HABITS:

The Brackets and other orthodontic attachments are so delicate and they are bonded on to the tooth surface by chemical means. Hard foods like fruits, sugarcane, biscuits, sweets, chips and bones should not be taken during the course of theraphy. Soft drinks also to be avoided. If taken the orthodontic attachements get detached and complicate the treatment.

EFFECTS OF BREAKAGE:

Breakage of appliance leads to:

  • -Delay in treatment
  • -Improper finishing

FOLLOWUP TREATMENT:

Patients should report once in a month for review or as advised by your orthodontist.

BEFORE REPORTING TO YOUR ORTHODONTIST:

Brush properly and see that the teeth are free from the plaque. If the teeth are not clean, fresh orthodontic attachments cannot be bonded on to your teeth surface. Use mouth wash.
