ROOT CANAL TREATMENT(ENDODONTIC TREATMENT)
- Root canal treatment is a treatment aimed at saving painful; / infected broken teeth. This treatment is a nonsurgical treatment done after local anaesthesia. It does not require any post treatment rest period.
- Multiple visits may be necessary. X-ray of the tooth may be necessary. During / after treatment. If so the patient will be advised accordingly. Following root canal treatment rest to the tooth for 15 days by avoiding biting on the tooth is necessary. It is also necessary to take the medicines for the prescribed period. This treatment is not a filling type of treatment. Hence do not confuse a fillings and which are / may be painful after filling.
- This treatment offers 100% results in most cases. However the result is reduced by mobile teeth, weak teeth, teeth with extra roots, cross positioning of the tooth and also lack of patient cooperation. Though the treatment is slightly expensive comparing to tooth removal, tooth removal always necessitates replace of the tooth in the future which is an expensive affair. Hence it is better to save the tooth in the future which is an expensive affair. Hence it is better to save the tooth by doing a root canal treatment.
- Following Root Canal Treatment no follow up is necessary. In this treatment, the roots of the tooth are opened, thoroughly cleaned and a medication to control the infection and to stop the pain are coated. No filling is placed over the root treated tooth except the medicine. Filling is not part of this treatment. After a period of six months, the patient should come back for crowning (capping). For the crowning process, the patient should pay separately. In case of discoloured front teeth treated with root canal treatment, future crowning is essential. In case of heavily infected front teeth treated, future surgical cleaning of the stagnant infection may be necessary to keep the tooth trouble free.

- It is comfortable treatment with rewarding results provided you follow certain underlying guidelines. Don’t take any solid food at least for 2 hours after having the teeth fixed.
- It is quite normal to get the feeling of biting as soon when you grind your upper and lower teeth during the first 3 weeks after teeth fixation. This will slowly disappear with better matching of upper and lower teeth. Immediately after fixation, rough feeling may be present near the margins and over the artificial teeth. That is due to the excess cement flowing over the margins. After 15 days, come to the Doctor for a review. He will check the tight fit, proper placement and attend to the problems if any.
- Though the artificial teeth for the front teeth will withstand biting stresses it is strongly advised to avoid using them to bite. That is because the supporting natural teeth have only one root each and they may develop cracks and pain. In case of back teeth you are free to use them for chewing after you feel comfortable with them.
- Since you are wearing artificial teeth and since your other natural teeth are providing support for them. Keep your mouth extremely clean. Brush twice daily. Gargle after each meal. Strictly avoid betel / pan chewing. If you don’t allow this instruction, you may develop gum problems on your supporting teeth and decay may start in the neighbouring teeth. Then you will have to spend once more for new teeth fixation. Since the previous one won’t stay without the supporting teeth. Hence take extreme care.
